How years are counted
Adding a year keeps the day and month and advances the year. October 15 plus ten years is October 15 ten years later. There is only one case where that does not work cleanly, and it involves February 29.
February 29 and leap years
February 29 exists only in leap years. A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not. The next century year to be skipped is 2100.
When the starting date is February 29 and the target year is not a leap year, the result clamps to February 28. This is the convention used for legal age, insurance anniversaries and contract renewal dates. Someone born on February 29 is treated as a year older on February 28 in non-leap years in most jurisdictions.
Why the weekday shifts
A common year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day. So the same calendar date one year later falls one weekday later. A leap year adds a second day, so dates after February 29 shift by two weekdays instead of one. Across a 28 year cycle a given date passes through every day of the week.
The calculator shows the weekday of the resulting date, which is usually the detail people actually want when planning an event years ahead.
Where year counting is used
- Anniversaries and milestones. Founding dates, weddings and service awards.
- Legal deadlines. Limitation periods are commonly expressed in years from a triggering event.
- Financial products. Fixed terms, bond maturities and mortgage periods.
- Document expiry. Passports, licences and certifications issued for a fixed number of years.
