How weeks-ago calculations work

A week is exactly 7 days. Unlike months and years, weeks have no calendar edge cases: 3 weeks ago is always exactly 21 days ago, regardless of month boundaries, year boundaries, or leap years. This makes week-based date arithmetic the most predictable kind.

Weeks versus months

Many people confuse weeks and months. A month is not 4 weeks. Months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. Here is the comparison:

  • 1 month = 28 to 31 days (average 30.44 days)
  • 4 weeks = exactly 28 days
  • Difference: up to 3 days per month
  • Over a year, this adds up: 13 weeks = 91 days, but 3 months = 90 to 92 days depending on which months

When precision matters — legal notices, medication schedules, subscription billing — specify days or weeks rather than months if you want an exact count.

52 weeks versus 1 year

52 weeks is 364 days. A calendar year is 365 days (366 in a leap year). So 52 weeks ago is not the same as one year ago: it is one day earlier (or two days earlier if a February 29 falls in the interval). If you need exactly one year ago, use the Years Ago Calculator above.

Quarter approximations

A business quarter is approximately 13 weeks (91 days). Q1 is January through March (90 or 91 days), Q2 is April through June (91 days), Q3 is July through September (92 days), and Q4 is October through December (92 days). Because quarters are not exactly 13 weeks, "13 weeks ago" and "one quarter ago" may differ by up to 2 days.

Common uses for weeks-ago calculations

  • Medical and clinical: Gestational age is measured in weeks. Symptom onset, treatment start dates, and follow-up appointments are often scheduled by the week.
  • Subscription and billing: Weekly billing cycles, free trial periods, and subscription renewals expressed in weeks.
  • Project management: Sprint schedules (typically 1 or 2 weeks), milestone tracking, and retrospective periods.
  • Payroll: Weekly or biweekly pay periods. Knowing that payday was exactly 2 or 4 weeks ago anchors expense calculations.
  • Sports and fitness: Training plans, recovery schedules, and competition prep are typically counted in weeks.
  • Dietary and nutrition programs: Weight loss programs, elimination diets, and habit tracking are measured in weeks.

Why weeks always fall on the same weekday

A week is 7 days, and 7 days later always lands on the same day of the week by definition. So 1 week ago is the same weekday as today. 2 weeks ago is also the same weekday. This holds for any whole number of weeks. This is why weekly recurring meetings automatically fall on the same day, and why weekly alarms repeat correctly without adjustment.

ISO week numbers and week-ago calculations

The calculator shows the ISO week number for the result. Going back N weeks means going back exactly N ISO weeks. Week 30 minus 4 weeks is Week 26. The only complication is at the start of the year: Week 1 (ISO) is the first week containing a Thursday, and weeks before that belong to the previous year's Week 52 or 53.

Frequently asked questions

Two weeks (14 days) ago from today (November 8, 2026) was October 25, 2026. It falls on the same day of the week as today.
Four weeks (28 days) ago was August 26, 2026. Note that 4 weeks is not always the same as 1 month: months have 28 to 31 days, so 4 weeks ago and 1 month ago can differ by 0 to 3 days.
Thirteen weeks (91 days, approximately one quarter) ago was June 24, 2026.
Fifty-two weeks (364 days) ago was September 24, 2025. This is one day less than a full year, so 52 weeks ago falls on the same weekday as today but one day earlier in the calendar year (two days earlier after a leap year).
Six weeks (42 days) ago from today was September 27, 2026.
Twelve weeks (84 days) ago was July 5, 2026. This is close to, but not exactly, one quarter (13 weeks).
No. A month ranges from 28 to 31 days. Four weeks is always exactly 28 days. So 4 weeks ago and 1 month ago point to the same date only in February of a non-leap year.
