How calendar months are counted

Adding months keeps the day number and advances the month. Three months from the 15th lands on the 15th. The complication is that months have different lengths, so the day number does not always exist in the target month.

The end-of-month rule

When the day number does not exist in the target month, the date is clamped to the last day of that month. This is the convention used by ISO 8601, by most billing systems, and by contract law in many jurisdictions.

  • August 31 plus one month gives September 30, because September has 30 days.
  • January 31 plus one month gives February 28, or February 29 in a leap year.
  • January 31 plus three months gives April 30.
  • March 31 plus one month gives April 30.

One consequence catches people out: the operation is not reversible. January 31 plus one month is February 28, but February 28 minus one month is January 28, not January 31.

Months are not a fixed number of days

One month can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. The average across the Gregorian calendar is 30.44 days. That means a 30 day period and a one month period end on different dates in most months of the year, which matters for anything with a hard deadline.

If your requirement was written as a number of days, use the Days From Today Calculator rather than converting it into months.

Where month counting is used

  • Subscriptions and billing. Monthly cycles renew on the same day number each month, with the same end-of-month clamping.
  • Tenancy and notice periods. Leases and notice are almost always expressed in calendar months.
  • Warranties and guarantees. A 24 month warranty runs to the same day number two years out.
  • Probation and review dates. Employment milestones at 3, 6 and 12 months.
