How many weeks are in a year?
A common year has 52 weeks and 1 day, which works out to about 52.14 weeks. A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days, or about 52.29 weeks. Neither divides evenly, which is why a year never lines up exactly with a whole number of weeks and a fixed weekly schedule slowly drifts against the calendar.
This converter uses a 365-day year for its calculations, matching the common year figure most references quote. For the exact weekday-accurate answer on a specific date range, use the Weeks Between Dates Calculator instead, which counts real calendar weeks rather than an average.
Why "months" and "years" here are averages
Months and years do not have a fixed length in days: February has 28 or 29 days, other months have 30 or 31, and a year has 365 or 366 depending on whether it is a leap year. A unit converter needs one fixed number to work with, so this tool uses a 365-day year and a 30.42-day average month, the same convention used by most time unit converters and by Google's own conversion tool.
If you need the exact number of days between two real calendar dates rather than an average, use the Date Difference Calculator, which counts the actual days, including any leap years in the range.
Quick reference
- 1 week = 7 days = 168 hours
- 1 month (average) = about 30.4 days = 4.35 weeks
- 6 months = about 182.5 days, roughly 26 weeks
- 1 year = 365 days = 52.14 weeks = 8,760 hours
- 2 years = 730 days
