Easter 2027: Countdown Details
Easter Sunday falls on Sunday, March 28, 2027. That is an early Easter. The date can land anywhere between March 22 and April 25, and 2027 sits close to the early end of the range, eight days after the first day of spring. Last year Easter fell on Sunday, April 5, 2026. Next year it swings late again, to Sunday, April 16, 2028, a jump of almost three weeks that shows how far the date travels from year to year.
An early Easter pulls the whole season forward with it. Lent opens in the second week of February, in the middle of winter for most of the Northern Hemisphere, and Holy Week runs through the last full week of March. School breaks, church calendars and spring travel all key off these dates, and they are set out in full below.
Holy Week 2027, Day by Day
Easter is the end of a season rather than a single day. Lent, the 40 days of preparation, begins on Ash Wednesday. The count runs across 46 calendar days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, with the six Sundays along the way set apart from the fast, which is how the traditional figure of 40 fasting days is reached. Holy Week itself opens with Palm Sunday, one week before Easter.
| Day | Date in 2027 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shrove Tuesday | Tuesday, February 9 | The day before Lent, kept as Pancake Day in many places |
| Ash Wednesday | Wednesday, February 10 | Lent begins |
| Palm Sunday | Sunday, March 21 | Holy Week begins |
| Maundy Thursday | Thursday, March 25 | The Last Supper is remembered |
| Good Friday | Friday, March 26 | The crucifixion is commemorated; a public holiday in many countries |
| Holy Saturday | Saturday, March 27 | Easter Vigil services are held in the evening |
| Easter Sunday | Sunday, March 28 | The resurrection is celebrated |
| Easter Monday | Monday, March 29 | A public holiday in much of Europe and in Canada |
Why Easter Moves Every Year
Easter is worked out from the sky rather than the calendar. The rule, set in the year 325, places Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon that falls on or after March 21, the fixed date the church uses for the spring equinox. The full moon in the rule is a calendar moon defined by church tables. It tracks the real moon closely without matching it every year, which is why Easter can sit anywhere in a five-week window.
Orthodox churches apply the same rule with the older Julian calendar, which currently runs 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar, and with a requirement that Easter fall after Passover. In 2027 the two calculations land as far apart as they can: Orthodox Easter, or Pascha, falls on Sunday, May 2, 2027, five weeks after the Western date. In 2028 they meet again, with both traditions celebrating on April 16.
Passover usually sits close to Easter, since the Last Supper was a Passover meal. In 2027 the two festivals separate. Passover begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 21, 2027 and ends at nightfall on April 29, almost four weeks after Easter Sunday. Families and schools planning around both holidays face two distinct peaks in spring 2027 rather than one shared week.
Planning Around an Early Easter
School breaks and travel
In the United Kingdom and much of Europe, the Easter school break moves with the date, so a March Easter means an earlier holiday and, in many years, colder weather through it. Flights and hotels for the long weekend start climbing in price roughly eight to ten weeks out, which for 2027 means late January. In the United States, spring break weeks cluster through March regardless of Easter, and in 2027 the two patterns overlap through the middle of the month.
Two Mother’s Days
British Mothering Sunday follows the church calendar. It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which in 2027 is Sunday, March 7. American Mother’s Day follows a fixed rule, the second Sunday of May, and lands on Sunday, May 9, 2027. Families with ties to both countries get two dates two months apart, and only the British one moves with this countdown.
The clocks change on Easter morning
Europe moves its clocks forward on the last Sunday of March. In 2027 that Sunday is Easter Sunday itself, so the hour is lost in the early hours of March 28, just before sunrise services. The United States makes the same change two weeks earlier, on Sunday, March 14, 2027. Anyone travelling between the two that month crosses a shorter gap than usual for a fortnight.
Easter Around the World
The day is kept in different keys around the world. In Spain and much of Latin America, Holy Week, or Semana Santa, fills the streets with processions through the days counted in the table above, and whole cities plan their year around them. Sunrise services are a tradition in many countries, with congregations gathering outdoors before dawn on Easter Sunday, a start made earlier still in Europe in 2027 by the clock change that same morning.
Eggs carry the season almost everywhere: painted and blessed in baskets across Central and Eastern Europe, rolled down lawns in the United States and Britain, and hidden for hunts in gardens on several continents. In the Southern Hemisphere the festival falls in autumn rather than spring, so the symbols of new growth sit alongside harvest food. The date the countdown tracks is shared; the season wrapped around it depends on which half of the world you stand in.
How We Count the Days
Our countdown measures from the current moment to midnight at the start of March 28, 2027, using the time zone on your own device. That detail matters. A countdown fixed to one city, like New York, can show a different number than the one that is correct for you if you live in another time zone. Ours adjusts automatically.
The big day figure counts the complete days still to run before Easter Sunday. The sleeps figure counts the nights left to sleep before Easter morning, so it runs one ahead of the day figure whenever part of today still remains. Weekend days are the Saturdays and Sundays dated between today and Easter, and weekdays are the Mondays to Fridays in the same span. The stats strip also carries the shorter count to Good Friday, the day most spring holiday weekends are built around.
