Age Difference Calculator

Need to know exactly how much older one person is than another? Enter both dates of birth and this calculator tells you who is older, by how many years, months and days, and shows each person’s current age.

How the age gap is calculated

The gap between two people’s ages is fixed the moment they are both born, and it never changes. This calculator finds it by walking the calendar from the earlier birth date to the later one, counting whole years, then whole months, then the remaining days. That is the same method used across the rest of this site’s date tools. It does not divide the total day count by an average month length.

That distinction matters at the edges. If one birthday is February 29, most calculators either ignore leap years entirely or handle them inconsistently. This one borrows correctly across as many months as it takes to reach a non-negative day count, so a pair of birth dates that happen to straddle a leap year still produces an exact, self-consistent breakdown rather than a rounded estimate.

Example

Someone born on 14 March 1990 and someone born on 2 July 1994 are 4 years, 3 months and 18 days apart. The 1990-born person is currently older by exactly that amount, for the rest of both their lives. The gap itself never grows or shrinks, even though each person’s individual age keeps climbing every year.

Frequently asked questions

No. The exact calendar difference between two birth dates is fixed forever. What changes over time is each person’s own age, but the gap between them stays the same number of years, months and days for life.
Correctly. The calculation walks the real calendar rather than assuming every month is 30 days, so a February 29 birth date, or a gap that happens to cross one or more leap years, still produces the exact figure rather than an approximation.
Whichever birth date is earlier. You can enter the two dates in either order and the result always names the correct person as older, along with the exact gap.
It is a commonly cited rule of thumb suggesting the youngest age someone should date is half their own age plus seven years. It has no scientific basis and is not something this calculator applies or endorses; it simply reports the exact age gap and leaves any judgment about it to you.
